It might actually bring back the space race again but this time there's profit for the winner...

I can see many benifits to this across the board. I wonder if it will ever get to the stage where its more cost effective to mine in space than on earth. Hey, we might actually help save the planet after all Rolling Eyes

"A single platinum-rich space rock 1,650 feet (500 meters) wide contains the equivalent of all the platinum-group metals ever mined throughout human history, company officials said."

There is an eye opener.

I think the real question here is, what the heck are they smoking, and where can we get some?

And what about if they royally fuck up and manage to drop an asteroid on our planet. Whoops, sorry Canada, you're no longer on the face of the earth!

We can't even get offshore drilling right without ruining the gulf, so why the hell do we want to start playing god with celestial bodies?

http://www.ted.com/talks/phil_plait_how_to_defend_earth_from_asteroids .html

NASA seems pretty confident about it, in fact we have to do this with population reducers. Instead of the crappy Hollywood movies where we nuke the asteroid, we use physics. Sometimes we actually have large asteroids orbiting Earth that could be considered temporary moons.

That may be the case, but I feel like we've got more urgent things to take care of prior to wrangling space rocks.

For instance, we could solve world hunger, global warming, and overpopulation with a large bout of genocide.

Who's to say this operation isn't a front to do just that? Again, sorry Canada!

happy

I feel like that was pretty paranoid, even for me.

Sometimes the most useful inventions are the accidental ones. Just look at penicillin Wink

That said, accidental genocide is known to happen too... Shocked
